Terms of Service

These Terms of Service ("Terms") govern your use of DistillBrief("the Service"), operated by DistillBrief. By accessing or using the Service, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, do not use the Service.

DistillBrief extracts text from digital and scanned PDFs — using OCR when needed — and uses AI to generate summaries and exportable output. AI-generated summaries may contain inaccuracies, omissions, or misinterpretations. Outputs are provided for informational purposes only. You are responsible for reviewing results before relying on them for business, legal, financial, or other important decisions.

OCR quality depends on scan resolution and document clarity. Very long scanned documents may hit page limits based on your plan.

You are solely responsible for the documents and content you upload. You agree that you will not:

• Upload content you do not have the right to use
• Upload illegal, infringing, or copyright-violating material
• Upload malware or attempt to disrupt the Service
• Use the Service to violate any applicable law or regulation
• Misrepresent AI-generated output as human-reviewed professional advice

PDFs are processed temporarily in memory. Extracted text may be sent to OpenAI for summarization. Do not upload highly sensitive or confidential documents unless you accept this workflow.

You may use basic upload features without an account. Signing in enables saved history, usage tracking, and subscription features.

Free accounts include a limited number of PDF summaries per month. Pro accounts include unlimited summaries while the subscription is active, subject to fair use and abuse prevention measures.

We may change plan limits, features, or pricing with reasonable notice where required. Existing subscribers will be notified of material pricing changes according to applicable law and Stripe billing policies.

Pro subscriptions are billed on a recurring basis through Stripe. By subscribing, you authorize Stripe to charge your payment method at the price shown at checkout.

You can cancel your subscription at any time from the billing page using the Stripe Customer Portal. Cancellation stops future billing; access to Pro features may continue until the end of the current paid billing period.

Refunds are handled case-by-case. Unless required by law, payments are generally non-refundable once a billing period has started. Contact support@distillbrief.com if you believe a charge was made in error.

We want DistillBrief to remain fast and reliable for everyone. We may rate-limit, restrict, suspend, or terminate access if we reasonably believe you are:

• Abusing API limits or automated scraping
• Uploading prohibited content
• Attempting to compromise the Service
• Using the Service in a way that harms other users or our infrastructure

We may investigate misuse and cooperate with law enforcement when required.

We do not guarantee uninterrupted or error-free availability. The Service may be unavailable due to maintenance, third-party outages (including OpenAI, Stripe, Clerk, or hosting providers), or events outside our control.

We may modify, suspend, or discontinue features at any time. We will try to provide reasonable notice for material changes when practical.

THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, WHETHER EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, INCLUDING IMPLIED WARRANTIES OF MERCHANTABILITY, FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE, AND NON-INFRINGEMENT.

We do not warrant that summaries will be accurate, complete, or suitable for your specific use case.

TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, DISTILLBRIEF AND ITS OPERATORS WILL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS, DATA, OR GOODWILL, ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE.

Our total liability for any claim related to the Service will not exceed the amount you paid us in the twelve (12) months before the claim arose, or one hundred U.S. dollars (USD $100), whichever is greater.

You agree to indemnify and hold harmless DistillBrief from claims, damages, and expenses (including reasonable legal fees) arising from your uploaded content, your use of the Service, or your violation of these Terms.

These Terms are governed by the laws applicable in our place of business, without regard to conflict-of-law principles. Any disputes will be handled in the courts of that jurisdiction, unless otherwise required by applicable consumer protection laws.

We may update these Terms from time to time. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will reflect the latest version. Continued use after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated Terms.
